I have definitely read The Great Gatsby before, and I’ve seen the 2013 adaptation. I’ve only read it once and it was right before the movie came out and I was primarily interested in the soundtrack, to be honest. Aesthetically, I think the Baz Luhrmann film does a lot for me, but overall, I don’t particularly find the story of The Great Gatsby enjoyable. A lot of my feelings about the book come from its fanbase because I don’t think anyone can genuinely relate to any of the characters in the novel and I just don’t find that the book has a lot of depth beyond the worship of capitalism. I also just feel like it’s particularly pushed in Winthrop’s English department, but that could just be me.
